What did you study at university?
Electronic Engineering at the University of York
What made you apply to a tech grad programme?
I applied for a tech grad programme as I’ve also had an interest in using technology to solve problems, starting in school, then university and then as a career. I specifically chose the Tech Academy, as I wanted to join formalised training in a new technology area, to the actual work I’ll do in my day-to-day work.
Had you always considered tech as a career?
I had always been interested in technology from school but didn’t really understand what specific jobs were out there. It was only until university, when I actually saw for myself the areas that tech can take you and all the interesting problems people were solving with it.
What did you know about coding before joining the programme?
I had only taken a couple of modules at university in different languages but always seemed to forget what I learnt after the module had ended! Another reason for me joining the tech academy, was to actually put into practice the coding languages I was using, rather than just forgetting it after the exam!
How did you find the recruitment process?
The recruitment process into the Tech Academy was very quick compared to other graduate programmes, I felt included at every step and was kept up to date with phone calls from Georgina. Although the assessment day can seem daunting, it is a great way to show off how you work in a tech team, even if you’ve never done it before!
What have you found interesting so far?
The most interesting thing I’ve found so far is the amount I’ve learnt in such a short period of time. From starting with very little knowledge, to actually being able to build a simple web application in a few days is amazing.
What do you enjoy about Leeds?
I really enjoy all the different events and things to do across the city/local area every weekend, for all tastes. Although I’ve only been in the city for a few weeks, I’ve already been to a couple of gigs, food/beer festivals and explored quieter green villages that are only a short train ride away.
What advice would you give someone applying?
Definitely don’t think that having no or a little knowledge of coding is a disadvantage! Everyone at SBG will be happy to help you out and there are never any stupid questions!
