Who are you and what do you do? Hi! I’m James Feakins and I’m a Junior Games Designer at Core Gaming, having joined in December 2018, I’m pretty new to everything here at Core and Sky B&G. What do you enjoy most about your job? Being able to finally use the skills I’ve been building over the course of my life is immensely satisfying, using what I’ve learned to overcome challenges and problems gives me drive to go even further. Plus, everyone I work with at Core are incredibly kind and supportive, it makes all the difference in how you approach work. What sets SBG apart from other tech businesses? Here at Core, I’ve been given exactly what I need to achieve my goals but it’s also the amazingly supportive team that really set Sky B&G apart from other companies. I was told during my interview and when I first started that “If you can use the skills you’ve learned here to go beyond and achieve what you want, then we’ve done our job” and really, that says everything about how they see their staff. I feel valued and supported.
Would you say SBG is a great place to work? Absolutely, not only do you get the support and training to do your job, your skills are nurtured to go beyond if that’s what you want, you’re in control of where you go and what you want to do. Not to mention all the great and helpful benefits too! Which of our Core Ways do you best represent? “Learn and Adapt” Being on the art side of creating the games that Sky B&G, Learn and Adapt is a core principle of the art industry as a whole. When you encounter problems or time crunch, learning how you can best utilise your skills to achieve your goal is a key skill.
What is one of the things you would put on your ‘bucket’ list?’ The late and great Terry Pratchett was so excited when he was Knighted in 2009, he wanted to follow it up and equip himself properly for his new title, he gathered his own iron ore along with real pieces of meteorite and forged his own sword with the help of a friend who is a skilled blacksmith. While it might be a bit ‘out there’ I would love to one day do the same (Knighthood pending…).
