Last week our Sky Betting & Gaming Pride work stream organised a festive lunch for members of 'Friends of Dorothy', a social enterprise fighting isolation in the elderly LGBTQ+ community...
Why it matters..
Older people who are LGBT+ are 50% more likely to be living alone than their straight peers and are more likely to be estranged from their families. Studies also show older LGBT people who came out in the 1960s and 70s feel unable to share their life stories and can effectively end up going back in the closet when it comes to sheltered accommodation and care homes.
Who are Friends of Dorothy?
A social enterprise that launched in July 2017 with the specific aim to combat isolation and loneliness among older LGBT+ people. They host monthly gatherings where friendships are made and inter-generational links formed with the younger LGBT+ community. Friends of Dorothy also has a befriending network that ensures someone is always available at the end of the phone or for a visit.
