I work in the trading tribe on some of our risk management tools.
What technology do you use?
We use a number of technologies, including NodeJS, MySQL, MongoDB and RabbitMQ on some of our older infrastructure, with our newer services being built on the JVM using Kotlin connecting to Kafka. We use Infrastructure as Code (IaC) extensively here, with Chef, Terraform and Helm used extensively throughout the tribe.
What it’s like to work in your tribe on a daily basis?
After our morning standup, we try and get any meetings out of the way as soon as we can to free up the rest of the day. This can be planning for the next sprint (we’re using SCRUM in our tribe), technical elaboration on a specific issue or feature we are experiencing or even a demo for an individual to bring the rest of the squad up to date on a particular meaty bit of work.
After that, it’s usually continuing on with our backlog of work. At the minute we are in the final stages of rolling out a new service, so there’s a lot of crossing the T’s and dotting the I’s.
You’re favourite three things about working for Sky Betting and Gaming…
There is an emphasis on doing things ‘properly’. No hatchet jobs here
Plenty of learning and development opportunities here. For example, Sky Bet covered a trip to Amsterdam for KotlinConf 2018
I have a family with young children, so the flexibility that Sky Bet offers to me is extremely valuable. I leave a little early on a Wednesday in order to pick my kids up from school, and that was just a conversation with my manager - the trust is there which meant I didn’t have to arrange anything formal.
